It started out as a mere thought of Michael “Cookie” Jones. He had the passion, love, and drive that no other person could imagine for the game. Cookie as he’s known to his community, and family wanted to give back to the community as they had graciously giving to him during his days of playing.
Cookie started out at the Raleigh Boys Club, and then to play at Martin Middle School, Daniels Middle School, and finally playing high school ball at Enloe High School where he displayed his skills as one of the best players in Enloe’s history. As his high school basketball career ended, and his quest to further his education and career, began in 1981, when he enrolled at Merced College, Merced California. He was first team Jr. College All American (1983), and in 1983 he transfer to Seton Hall University, South Orange New Jersey.
During his tenure, Cookie held many records, (in assist, and steals). During his playing days at “The Hall” he played against some of the best like Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullen, Dwayne Washington, Ed Pinkney, Michael Adams, and Walter Berry, just to name a few.
Through his dedication and determination Cookie loved the game of basketball, but he was looking for the drive that he once held while playing in previous years. In 1995 his love turned to his little Miss Mykia Jones. She had all the characteristics of her daddy, and Mike saw and felt the passion that she had when she held a basketball, at this point he knew that the game that he so much fell in love with was once again alive through his daughter’s eyes.
In January 2006, Cookie stated that he wanted to be able to train his daughter, and give her the guidance that she needed to achieve academically and athletically throughout her career. With his sidekick Mykia at his side they sat down and pondered over many sketches, names, colors and design before coming up with……
J4 Pirates:
The “J” stands for Jones
The “4” is the number that Cookie wore during his basketball career
The “Pirates” represent the Seton Hall Pirates.
In October 1, 2006, J4 Pirates was formed and created, and they have giving a new name to AAU basketball.
